Planning your Christening

Christening (noun) ~ the ceremony of baptism, as accompanied by the giving of a name to a child

A Christening gown or Christening robe is a very long, white infants' garment now made especially for the ceremony of christening and usually only worn then. They were historically, up until the 19th century, the normal, or at least "best"outer clothing of babies. The moment of progression to shorter dresses (for both boys and girls) was known as "shortcoating", which coincided with the beginning of walking, which was impossible in a long robe. Christening gowns are usually made of silk, fine white linen or cotton fabric, and may be trimmed with tucks, lace, whitework embroidery, and other handwork. Christening gowns often have matching bonnets and become family heirlooms used generation after generation.

The church is booked, your God Parents or Supporters selected & your guest list finalised. Organising a Christening or Naming ceremony can be a complicated task & once the details of the event are confirmed your attention turns to what your little one will wear for their special day!

Gowns are beautiful for boys or girls but depending on the age of your child you may prefer a dress or a bloomer set for a little girl or a silk romper or linen suit for your little boy?

Consider the weather on the day of your ceremony. A shawl or cardigan might be needed, even if the weather should be warm. Churches can be cool even on a summerÌs day.

Don't forget those important accessories. Matching shoes, socks, hats & head bands can compliment any outfit & silk bibs also have a very practical purpose!

If you are inviting guests back following the ceremony then consider whether you will need an alternative outfit to change your little one in to. This might be more comfortable & can give you the option to select something more colourful for the party afterwards!

If you are purchasing a gown then consider whether you will want to use it again & pass it on in the family as an heirloom gown. There are styles of gown which are suitable for boys & girls, especially useful for future siblings.

Remember, your little girl or boy will look gorgeous in any outfit you choose for them. Choose an outfit that you feel comfortable with & you will have a perfect day!
